Tactical Rope Basic
Course Information
Duration: 4 Days [40 hours]
Certification: A certificate will be issued to each participant upon successful completion of the course. Certification is valid for three years.
Re-Certification: T’NT recommends an annual in-house practical evaluation and mandatory re-certification within three years, or advancement to TRO
Evaluation: Each participant will be required to pass a practical skills evaluation
Course Description
The TRB course if for members with minimal rope experience, such as new tactical team members or TEMS medics. Participants may have completed their in-house BTOC training, or introductory in-house training, and are now ready to be introduced to rope rigging, access, and rescue fundamentals. TRB trains a new operator to become proficient with basic skills and rigging techniques.

- Anchoring [Single-Point and BFK Multi-Point]
- Edge Transitions [High and Low Point]
- Maneuvering on Rope [Rappelling, RAD Climbing]
- Mechanical Advantage Systems [Simple]
- Raises and Lowers [SRT]
- Rescue and Recovery [Team Members, Self-Rescue]
- Safety [“AHRE” Anchor, Harness, Rappel Device, Edge]
- Team Management [Roles and Responsibilities, Communications]
- Team Movement on Rope [Window Entries, Balconies, Missed exits]
BY THE END OF THIS TRAINING, PARTICIPANTS SHOULD BE ABLE TO:
- Ascend and descend on rope
- Conduct a system safety check and place rope protection
- Construct a lowering system, and a simple mechanical advantage raising system
- Construct a single and multi-point anchor system
- Demonstrate knots, bends, and hitches
- Understand rope characteristics and the use of static and dynamic ropes
- Use high points for edge transition and friction management
Prerequisites
Pre-Requisites: Organization’s BTOC
Participants should be proficient with basic knots, proper donning/doffing of a harness, proficient with loading/unloading of descent control devices, basic rappel, and self-check/buddy check.

- Rappelling with auto-lock (Druid/Rig/Spark) and friction device (ATC/Reverso)

- Roll Clip A
- Petzl Basic or Croll S
- 100’-150’ dynamic rope (suitable diameter for your devices) with leg bag
- 1x 240cm sling
- Tandem 7mm prusiks
- STREP edge pro mat
- 5x Auto Locking Carabiners
- 2x Pear-Shaped Carabiners (Edelrid bulletproof)
- Foot Loop or 120cm Dyneema Sling
- Single pulley
- Double pulley
- 100’-150’ static rope (suitable diameter for your devices) with leg bag
- 2x 120cm slings with tubular webbing sheath
- Rigging plate
- 3m Petzl Grillon/Exo

The TRO course is designed for tactical team members with limited tactical rope experience, and it focuses on building core skills and competencies. Intermediate members on experienced teams will progressively learn rigging principles and establish good habits and best practices. Members will be proficient in building anchors, constructing systems, and rappelling alongside team members.
